Wild Camping

Wild Camping Etiquette

Leave No Trace: Perhaps the most important rule for wild campers is to leave no trace of their presence. Always pack out what you bring in, including litter, food scraps, and toilet waste. It’s also essential to pitch your tent on durable surfaces, such as grassy areas or previously used campsites, to avoid damaging the land.

It’s Not Completely Free for All: While Scotland does have a right to roam, wild camping is not free from rules. It’s crucial to follow local guidelines, be respectful of private landowners, and camp in a responsible manner.

Bothies

Staying in a bothy on the Isle of Jura offers a fantastic opportunity to experience the island’s rugged beauty in a remote and intimate way. Bothies are simple, rustic shelters that provide a basic refuge for walkers, hikers, and those seeking solitude in nature.

On Jura, there are a three bothies scattered across the north end of the west coast, Glengarisdale Bothy, located in a secluded bay, is owned by Barnhill Estate.  Cruib Lodge and Ruantallain Bothy, on the west coast of the island are managed by the Mountain Bothies Association (MBA), offering a basic shelter in one of Scotland’s most dramatic coastal regions.

Bothies like these allow adventurers to escape into nature, with no electricity or running water, providing the perfect environment to unwind, disconnect, and enjoy the tranquillity of Jura.

Campervans

Bringing a campervan that is over 7m is not advisable especially if it has a long overhang at the back.  You will damage it getting it off the wee ferry.  Please leave no trace and please don’t park up in the laybys, Jura has single track roads and we rely on these passing places to get about.
