Top 10 Things To Do on Jura

We packed a lot in under the titles, because there is way more than 10 top things to do!

Wild Swimming, Lochs & Beaches

Corran Sands is shallow and sheltered, as are the village beaches and Lowlandman’s Bay.  Inverlussa in the north has a wonderful bay for swimming.  Fresh water lochs are plentiful and Jura is famous for its raised beaches on the west coast for the adventurous.   This photo is of a local swimming across one of the sheltered east coast bays.  Find out more about wild swimming on Jura or which beaches to explore her within this website.

Climb The Might Paps of Jura

Climbing the Paps of Jura is a must for any adventurous souls. With no set paths and scree and bog underfoot it is not the height so much as the terrain that is the challenge. 3 punishing cones of Dalradian quartzite, 3 peaks in one day is manageable, or just scale one to see the most incredible views across Argyll & The Isles.

The hardest part is getting out to them, prepare for wet feet and a bog covered sock or two!  But once at the loch you can pick a spot and head on up any one of the mighty hills.  If looking to tick off a Corbett then the middle on is the one to aim for, Beinn an Òir is the highest at 785m.

Why not book Grant from Jura Guided he knows these hills like the back of his hand and competes each year in the legendary Jura Fell Race, training for months on end in these mighty hills.

Wellness

Philippa at Therapy On The Go runs yoga classes every Monday as well as beach yoga sessions  She also is a fanastic massage therapist.   Bothan Jura Retreat offers wood fired hot tubs, a sauna and ice barrel for a boost to your dopamine when staying in one of their bothans.

Bikes & Pedal Boards

If you’d like to see Jura in a different way why not hire a bike and helmet from Jura Cycles or head out on the water with a pedal board in the village from Ronald.  Our Things To Do section has more information on how to hire bikes and pedal boards.  You can also SUP (no where to rent I’m afraid) but the coast along from Craighouse to Corran Sands is very popular with Stand Up Paddleboarding.

Festivals & Fun

The Jura Music Festival and The Whisky Festival are two of the best known festivals on Jura.  However there are plenty of other events in the island’s calendar – Burns Supper, Jura Bake Off, Jura Sports and Regatta Weekend to name but a few, alongside spontaneous beach parties and ceilidhs in the hall.  For more information on events coming up go to our What’s On page.

Whirlpool & Waterfalls

The Corryvrekan whirlpool in the north of the island is the third largest whirlpool in the world, reached by boat trip or by foot.  Along the west coast and inland rivers there are plenty of magnificent waterfalls for those wishing for an invigorating wild, cold shower!

West Coast Bothies

Glengarrisdale, Cruib Lodge, and Ruantallain bothies provide welcoming, rustic refuges for those adventurous enough to explore the wild side of Jura along its uninhabited west coast.  Find out more about what to expect when sleeping in a bothy here on our Camping & Bothy page.
