Wild Sauna Jura — The sea is your plunge pool.
Bothan Jura Wild Sauna is Islay and Jura’s first mobile wild sauna — a wood-fired horsebox that travels to different coastal locations around Jura and across to Islay. Based at Bothan Jura Retreat in Knockrome, it brings an authentic wild sauna experience to some of the most spectacular shorelines in Scotland.
Just a short ferry hop from Islay, the wild sauna Jura has become a popular day trip for visitors and locals from Port Ellen to Port Askaig looking for something genuinely different. Wood-fired heat. Cold ocean plunges. Nothing between you and the horizon but salt air and silence.

Wild Sauna Jura — The Experience
Our wood-fired sauna sits on different shorelines with direct access to the sea. When based at home at Bothan Jura Retreat there is an ice barrel. You heat up in the traditional wood-burning sauna, then step straight into the Atlantic for cold water immersion — the same Atlantic that separates Jura from Islay on a clear day. The contrast between fire and ocean is immediate, invigorating, and entirely wild.
This isn’t a spa. There are no towel warmers or piped music. Just the crackle of burning wood, the sound of waves, and the kind of quiet you don’t find anywhere else.
Why Wild Sauna Jura?
They’re popping up everywhere – but why? The research is surprisingly good for something that’s essentially sitting in a hot wooden box.
Regular sauna use is linked to better cardiovascular health – your heart rate rises similarly to moderate exercise. A large Finnish study found people who used a sauna four or more times a week had significantly lower rates of cardiac events.
Sleep improves noticeably for most regular users. The drop in body temperature after a session signals your brain it’s time to sleep – people fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply.
For aches and pains, the heat increases circulation to muscles and joints. After a day on the hill it does what a hot bath tries to do, but better.
And there’s something about sitting in enforced stillness with no phone signal that resets the nervous system in a way that’s hard to replicate elsewhere. At wild sauna Jura, you also get the cold Atlantic straight afterwards. Not comfortable. Hard to feel stressed about anything afterwards though.
